Major development plans (MDPs) are proposals for major development at Sydney Airport that are submitted to and approved by the Australian Government in accordance with the Commonwealth Airports Act 1996 (the Act).

Since 2002, Sydney Airport has had three MDPs approved by the Australian Government.

Car parking and commercial facilities International Terminal Precinct MDP

This MDP allowed two multi-level car parks and two nine level commercial buildings to be constructed within Sydney Airport’s International Terminal (T1) Precinct. It was approved by the Australian Government on 18 April 2005.

Runway Safety Enhancement (Runway 25) MDP

This MDP allowed a runway end safety area (RESA) to be constructed at the western end of Sydney Airport’s east-west runway, also known as Runway 25. It was approved by the Australian Government on 15 August 2008.

T2/T3 Ground access solutions and hotel MDP

This MDP allowed the construction of new and reconfiguration of existing roads within Sydney Airport’s T2/T3 terminal precinct and the construction of a new hotel. It was approved by the Australian Government on 10 March 2015.
