Q&A with Joshna Bhana, Tenancy Delivery Manager and Alexandria local

Meet Joshna: she works behind the scenes to deliver complex retail fit outs across the T1 International and T3 Domestic terminals. From her first job delivering newspapers, to the fast-paced world of an airport – she loves that every day is unique.

Outside of work, Joshna has volunteered for over 10 years with Vinnies in Lewisham to provide meals to people experiencing homelessness.

Get the scoop on how Joshna’s role makes a trip through Sydney Airport fun for travellers, the latest upgrades and even the secret world behind hidden airport doors.

Tell us about your role at Sydney Airport and what a typical day looks like for you at Sydney Airport?

I work as the Airport Tenancy Delivery Manager, which means I manage retail fitouts with our tenants across T1 International and T3 Domestic. I work closely with retailers, contractors and internal teams to bring new spaces to life.

Across Terminal 1, there’s new food offerings due to open mid-2026 and some of our existing food retailers are getting new designs. It’s exciting to contribute to the major developments at SYD and working to create a better passenger experience.

No two days are ever the same (which I love!). My mornings usually start with checking emails and planning for upcoming meetings and site visits (while having breaky and my green tea – I can’t start the day without this). From there, it’s out on site, checking progress of the projects, answering contractor questions, problem-solving on the fly and keeping projects moving.

What’s something surprising about your job?

You get to explore parts of the airport that most people would never even know existed. Did you know, to get to the high-end shopfronts of Tiffany, Cartier, Saint Laurent, Dior, and Gucci, there is a third level mezzanine? This area can only be accessed through a number of doors traversing back of house areas and facilities, back through the terminal and through several doors again.

One of my current projects is developing the fitout for a gym at SYD – who would have thought that a gym would be available to travellers? It’s a great addition to the terminal and great to encourage people to keep moving whilst travelling.

How long have you been with Sydney Airport and what inspired you to work in the aviation industry?

It will be 4 years in May. It’s been a great journey so far: fast-paced, challenging and full of opportunities to learn something new every day. I love the excitement and diversity. It’s such a dynamic environment, and no day is ever the same.

What do you enjoy most about your job and how does the work you do support local businesses and the community?

I get to work with such a wide range of people, teams and personalities every day, and that’s what really makes it enjoyable. By helping tenants open and operate successfully, we’re supporting businesses that create jobs and bring diversity to the airport experience. Many of our retailers are local or Australian brands, so there’s a strong flow-on benefit to the broader community to provide jobs and contribute to the local economy.

What do you love about your local community?

I live in Alexandria. I love the community vibe, the food scene and how close everything is – it’s a great balance of friendly people and convenience. Living this close to the airport also means that I am contributing to the success of my local community – it’s a great connection to have.

Tell us a bit about you - what do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

I’m originally from New Zealand and have lived in Australia for almost half my life – Sydney is definitely home. When I’m not at SYD, you’ll usually find me walking my dog, Milo, at the yoga studio or reading self-development books.

For the past 10 years, once a month, I have led a team with St Vincent de Paul (Vinnie’s) at Lewisham, heading out to help feed people experiencing homelessness. Hearing their stories, it reminds me why giving back matters – and that simple acts of kindness can really change someone’s day.

Window or aisle seat – and why?

Aisle for sure. It’s much easier for bathroom breaks.

Can you share a memorable travel experience you’ve had?

I recently returned from a trip to India for a surprise visit to see family. I love the chaos – the noise, the crowds, the smells.

What was your first-ever job, and how did it shape your career?

I delivered a paper run when I was 12, it was pretty fun and I learned so much. I always had a part-time job growing up, and I think that’s where my strong work ethic began.

How does your work affect travellers and the overall airport experience?

Retail and restaurants play a big part in how passengers feel as they move through the airport. Our role is to deliver fitouts to the highest standard, so travellers have a great experience from the moment they arrive at the airport to the moment they board the plane.

j6

Can you share a project that was especially challenging or unusual to deliver?

Working on the T1 luxury retail precinct stands out. The complexity of the high-end shopfronts and delivering works in a secure environment definitely pushed the team – but it was incredibly rewarding to see it all come together.

If you could swap jobs with anyone at the airport for a day, what would it be?

I’ve always said I’d come back as a Sydney Airport volunteer ambassador once I retire. It would be a great way to stay connected and give back.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a career at Sydney Airport?

Grab the opportunity with both hands. It’s such a fascinating place to work, with so much to learn and so many different career paths. Check out career opportunities at Sydney Airport.
